# Tesla charging calculator: cost, time and miles

Calculate what **your next Tesla charge** is likely to cost. Enter battery percentage, charging power and the electricity price you actually pay, then estimate session cost, charge time, wall energy, miles added, monthly energy cost and an optional gas-car comparison.

## Quick answer: what does a Tesla charging calculator need?

A useful charging estimate needs five things:

1. Starting and target state of charge.
2. A usable-battery energy assumption.
3. Estimated charging losses between the wall and battery.
4. Average charging power delivered to the vehicle.
5. The electricity or public-charging price that applies to the session.

**Battery energy** = usable battery kWh × SOC increase.

**Wall energy** = battery energy ÷ charging efficiency.

**Charging time** = wall energy ÷ average charging power.

**Charging cost** = wall energy × price per kWh.

The interactive HTML calculator keeps every assumption editable instead of pretending one battery size, charging speed or electricity rate applies to every Tesla.

## Interactive calculator outputs

The calculator shows:

- Session electricity cost.
- Battery energy added.
- Energy drawn from the wall.
- Estimated charging time.
- Estimated finish time if charging starts now.
- Energy-equivalent miles added.
- Electricity cost per 100 miles.
- Estimated monthly Tesla energy cost from miles driven.
- Comparable gasoline fuel cost from MPG and gas price.
- Monthly and annual energy/fuel difference.

Model choices are **planning presets**, not official specifications for a specific VIN or model year. Battery capacity and efficiency remain editable.

## Home charging and fast-charging examples

For a 40 kWh wall-energy requirement:

| Charging setup | Planning power | Idealized 40 kWh time |
| --- | ---: | ---: |
| 120V outlet | 1.4 kW | ~28 h 35 min |
| 240V, 32A | 7.7 kW | ~5 h 12 min |
| Wall Connector, 48A | 11.5 kW | ~3 h 29 min |
| DC fast charging | 100 kW average example | ~24 min |

These are energy ÷ power calculations, not promises of real charging duration. AC power can be limited by the vehicle or electrical installation. DC fast charging tapers and varies with battery state, temperature and site conditions. For public charging, use a realistic **average** power rather than the stall's advertised peak.

## How much will charging add to my electric bill?

Monthly charging cost is better estimated from **miles driven × Wh/mi × charging losses × electricity rate** than from the cost of a hypothetical 0–100% charge.

If your utility uses time-of-use pricing, run the same monthly calculation with your off-peak and peak rates. The difference shows the value of moving eligible charging into the cheaper period.

## Tesla versus gas: energy cost only

The calculator can compare Tesla electricity cost with a gasoline car using monthly miles, MPG and gas price. This comparison is deliberately narrow. It does **not** include purchase price, depreciation, insurance, taxes, maintenance or charging-installation cost.

## FAQ

### How much does it cost to charge a Tesla?

Charging cost depends on the energy drawn from the wall and the electricity price you pay. Estimate wall kWh from the state-of-charge change and charging losses, then multiply by the applicable price per kWh.

### How long does it take to charge a Tesla at home?

A planning estimate is wall energy in kWh divided by average charging power in kW. Real charging can take longer because available power, temperature and vehicle behavior can vary.

### Can this calculator estimate Supercharger charging time?

Yes, but enter a realistic average DC charging power rather than the stall maximum. A Tesla connected to a high-power Supercharger does not hold the site maximum for the entire session.

### How much will charging a Tesla add to my electric bill?

Enter your monthly miles, driving efficiency and electricity rate. The calculator estimates monthly wall energy and electricity cost. A time-of-use plan can produce a different result depending on when you charge.

### Is a Tesla cheaper to fuel than a gas car?

The calculator can compare electricity cost with gasoline cost using your monthly miles, MPG and gas price. It is an energy-only comparison and does not include purchase price, insurance, depreciation, maintenance or taxes.

### Why are Tesla model presets labeled planning assumptions?

Battery capacity and efficiency vary by model year, trim, wheels, weather and driving conditions. Presets make the calculator quicker to use, but the advanced fields remain editable and should not be treated as official specifications for a specific vehicle.

## From estimate to actual data

The calculator is useful before a charge. DriveQuery is being built to keep the real charging session with the vehicle's trip and charging history, so planning assumptions can later be replaced with measured energy and rate context.
