Quick answer · HMRC 2026/27
A useful business mileage log records when and why the journey happened, where it started and ended and the business miles travelled. HMRC says mileage logs sent with an employee tax-relief claim must include the reason for every journey and the start and end postcodes.
For 2026/27, the approved amount is 55p per business mile for the first 10,000 miles in the tax year, then 25p per mile.
An eligible fellow-employee passenger can add 5p per business mile in a car or van when HMRC conditions are met.
The 55p/25p calculation is for qualifying business use of an employee's own car or van. Company-car fuel or electricity reimbursement uses different rules.
DriveQuery calculates road miles from the addresses you enter, lets you record journey purpose and exports PDF or Excel. The Business/Private choice is a reporting label, not a tax ruling; ordinary commuting is normally private travel.
