Production and consumption carbon

Production describes electricity generated in a zone. Consumption also accounts for electricity imports through flow tracing. Both are calculated lifecycle emissions in gCO₂e/kWh; they are not interchangeable with direct-emissions measurements.

24-hour and 7-day periods

The map opens on a 24-hour energy-weighted overview. You can select 7 days. Each zone’s period ends at its latest publishable closed hour, so reporting periods can differ between zones. Reload for a new snapshot.

Coverage and limits

Open a zone to inspect its reporting period, sources and coverage. Missing values are not zero. Partial coverage is labelled separately for production and consumption. The map does not guarantee complete real-time data.

The text overview below uses the 24-hour snapshot at page load and stays on that period when you change the interactive map. It is not a live ranking of the cleanest countries.

Great Britain electricity generation: latest published 24-hour period

A sufficiently complete, recent GB generation summary is not available. Open Great Britain in the interactive map to inspect available periods and coverage. Missing values do not mean zero generation.

Electricity carbon intensity: 24-hour overview

Energy-weighted, calculated lifecycle emissions. Production and flow-traced consumption are separate measures. Each zone uses its own latest publishable 24-hour period.

Missing values are not zero. Coverage is the share of hours with usable data for each metric. Different reporting periods are not a like-for-like live ranking. This text overview stays on the 24-hour snapshot loaded with the page.

UK electricity generation: sources and coverage

DriveQuery uses Elexon Insights / BMRS for GB generation and grid load. Values are aggregated from published data and may be revised. The table shows available generation components; missing components are not zero.

Reported generation and grid load are separate quantities. Imports, exports, storage and differences in data coverage can make their totals differ. MW is power; it is not the same as MWh of energy over a period.

National Grid / NESO carbon intensity

NESO’s Carbon Intensity service publishes estimated and forecast emissions for Great Britain. DriveQuery’s production and flow-traced consumption figures use calculated lifecycle emissions in gCO₂e/kWh, so they are not the same metric as NESO’s direct generation-emissions estimates.

The map displays electricity data by zone. It does not map every physical cable or substation. For your charging bill, use the UK EV tariff comparison or the charging cost calculator. Read about Tesla smart charging to distinguish tariff scheduling from grid context.

Frequently asked questions

Is this live UK electricity generation?

The page shows the latest sufficiently complete published 24-hour GB period where available. It is a dated snapshot, not a second-by-second reading. Reload for a new snapshot and check the reporting period.

Does Great Britain include Northern Ireland?

No. The GB zone covers England, Scotland and Wales. Do not read its figures as a complete United Kingdom total.

Is carbon intensity the same as the electricity price?

No. Carbon intensity describes emissions per unit of electricity. Your household or EV tariff determines your retail price; this map does not provide a supplier quote.
