Quick answer · IRS 2026
What should a US mileage log record?
A useful business mileage log preserves the date, business destination, business purpose and business miles for each qualifying drive. IRS Publication 463 also points to total vehicle mileage for the year as part of the vehicle-use record.
The IRS rate is optional. A mileage log supports records but does not by itself decide deductibility or employer reimbursement.
DriveQuery calculates road miles from the addresses you enter, lets you add business purpose and exports PDF or Excel. Marking a trip Business is a reporting choice, not a tax determination; ordinary commuting is generally nonbusiness travel.
