Tesla charging calculator
Tesla charging calculator: cost, time and miles
Calculate what your next Tesla charge is likely to cost. Start with battery percentage, charging power and your electricity price, then see session cost, charge time, miles added, monthly energy cost and an optional gas-car comparison.
Interactive tool
Calculate a Tesla charging session
Choose a quick planning preset or enter your own values. The calculator keeps battery energy, wall losses, charging power and electricity price separate so you can see what drives the result.
1. Your Tesla and charge
Planning inputs2. How are you charging?
Use average powerFor public fast charging, enter the price shown for that site and a realistic average charging power. A 250 kW stall does not mean the car averages 250 kW for the full session.
Advanced battery and efficiency assumptions
Model presets are transparent planning assumptions, not official specifications for a particular VIN or model year. Adjust these values when you know your own vehicle's energy use.
3. Monthly cost & gas comparison
Energy onlyThe gas comparison includes only electricity versus gasoline. It does not include purchase price, depreciation, insurance, taxes, maintenance or charging-installation cost.
Use measured data when you have it. A charging receipt, utility meter or Tesla charging record is better evidence for a real session than a battery-capacity estimate. DriveQuery keeps the assumptions visible instead of pretending one Tesla battery size, charging speed or electricity rate applies everywhere.
Quick answer
What does a Tesla charging calculator need to know?
A useful charging estimate needs more than a battery size. The important inputs are how much state of charge you need to add, usable battery energy, wall losses, average charging power and the price you actually pay per kWh.
State-of-charge change estimates battery energy. Charging losses convert that into energy drawn from the wall.
Time depends on average power delivered to the vehicle, not just the charger's advertised maximum.
Home utility rates and public charging prices can differ dramatically, so one nationwide Tesla price is not useful.
Home vs fast charging
The same energy need can produce very different charging times
| Charging setup | Planning power | 40 kWh idealized time | Use it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 120V outlet | 1.4 kW | ~28 h 35 min | Low daily mileage / backup charging |
| 240V · 32A | 7.7 kW | ~5 h 12 min | Typical overnight Level 2 planning |
| Wall Connector · 48A | 11.5 kW | ~3 h 29 min | Faster supported home AC charging |
| DC fast charging | 100 kW average example | ~24 min | Road-trip estimate using average power |
The table is energy ÷ power math, not a promise of real charge time. AC power can be limited by the vehicle or electrical installation. DC fast charging tapers and varies with state of charge, temperature and site conditions.
Monthly ownership question
How much will charging add to my electric bill?
That question is better answered from miles driven × vehicle energy use × your electricity rate than from “how much does a full battery cost?” The calculator estimates monthly wall energy from your own miles and Wh/mi assumption.
Time-of-use plan?
Run the same calculation once with your off-peak rate and once with your peak rate. The difference shows why charging timing can matter before any automation is involved.
Gas comparison
Compare energy cost, not total ownership cost
The gas comparison is deliberately narrow. It answers “what would electricity versus gasoline cost for the same monthly driving?” It does not claim that the vehicle with the lower energy bill has the lower total cost of ownership.
Uses your driving-efficiency and charging-loss assumptions.
Uses the mileage, fuel economy and fuel price you enter.
Shows only energy / fuel spending so the result remains transparent.
FAQ
Tesla charging calculator questions
How much does it cost to charge a Tesla?
Charging cost depends on the energy drawn from the wall and the electricity price you pay. Estimate wall kWh from the state-of-charge change and charging losses, then multiply by the applicable price per kWh.
How long does it take to charge a Tesla at home?
A planning estimate is wall energy in kWh divided by average charging power in kW. Real charging can take longer because available power, temperature and vehicle behavior can vary.
Can this calculator estimate Supercharger charging time?
Yes, but enter a realistic average DC charging power rather than the stall maximum. A Tesla connected to a high-power Supercharger does not hold the site maximum for the entire session.
How much will charging a Tesla add to my electric bill?
Enter your monthly miles, driving efficiency and electricity rate. The calculator estimates monthly wall energy and electricity cost. A time-of-use plan can produce a different result depending on when you charge.
Is a Tesla cheaper to fuel than a gas car?
The calculator can compare electricity cost with gasoline cost using your monthly miles, MPG and gas price. It is an energy-only comparison and does not include purchase price, insurance, depreciation, maintenance or taxes.
Why are Tesla model presets labeled planning assumptions?
Battery capacity and efficiency vary by model year, trim, wheels, weather and driving conditions. Presets make the calculator quicker to use, but the advanced fields remain editable and should not be treated as official specifications for a specific vehicle.
