Interactive tool
Calculate a Tesla charging session
Free calculator. No account or Tesla connection needed. Enter your own rate for a home or public charging estimate.
Choose a quick planning preset or enter your own values. The calculator keeps battery energy, wall losses, charging power and electricity price separate so you can see what drives the result.
1. Your Tesla and charge
Planning inputs2. How are you charging?
Use average powerFor public fast charging, enter the price shown for that site and a realistic average charging power. A 250 kW stall does not mean the car averages 250 kW for the full session.
Advanced battery and efficiency assumptions
Model presets are transparent planning assumptions, not official specifications for a particular VIN or model year. Adjust these values when you know your own vehicle's energy use.
3. Monthly cost & gas comparison
Energy onlyThe gas comparison includes only electricity versus gasoline. It does not include purchase price, depreciation, insurance, taxes, maintenance or charging-installation cost.
Use measured data when you have it. A charging receipt, utility meter or Tesla charging record is better evidence for a real session than a battery-capacity estimate. DriveQuery keeps the assumptions visible instead of pretending one Tesla battery size, charging speed or electricity rate applies everywhere.
Model 3 and Model Y: 20–80% charging examples
Editable planning assumptions, not official specifications for a model year or VIN. Both examples use 18.16¢/kWh (the dated Jan–Jun 2026 EIA benchmark), 10% charging losses and 7.7 kW average home charging power. Replace the rate with your own bill.
Model 3 RWD
A 60 kWh usable-battery assumption gives 36.0 kWh added to the battery and 40.0 kWh purchased: $7.26 and about 5 h 12 min. Driving efficiency assumption: 245 Wh/mi.
Calculate with these assumptionsModel Y Long Range AWD
A 75 kWh usable-battery assumption gives 45.0 kWh added to the battery and 50.0 kWh purchased: $9.08 and about 6 h 30 min. Driving efficiency assumption: 295 Wh/mi.
Calculate with these assumptionsTesla Supercharger cost calculator example
For an illustrative 75 kWh battery charged from 20% to 80%, assuming 45.0 kWh billed at 40¢/kWh, energy costs $18.00. At 100 kW average power, the idealized duration is 27 min. This example sets additional charging losses to 0%; adjust billed energy or losses to the session you are estimating. This is not a live Tesla price or a charging-curve prediction. Extra session, time and idle fees are excluded.

Quick answer
What does a Tesla charging calculator need to know?
A useful charging estimate needs more than a battery size. The important inputs are how much state of charge you need to add, usable battery energy, wall losses, average charging power and the price you actually pay per kWh.
State-of-charge change estimates battery energy. Charging losses convert that into energy drawn from the wall.
Time depends on average power delivered to the vehicle, not just the charger's advertised maximum.
Home utility rates and public charging prices can differ dramatically, so one nationwide Tesla price is not useful.
Home vs fast charging
The same energy need can produce very different charging times
| Charging setup | Planning power | 40 kWh idealized time | Use it for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 120V outlet | 1.4 kW | ~28 h 35 min | Low daily mileage / backup charging |
| 240V · 32A | 7.7 kW | ~5 h 12 min | Typical overnight Level 2 planning |
| Wall Connector · 48A | 11.5 kW | ~3 h 29 min | Faster supported home AC charging |
| DC fast charging | 100 kW average example | ~24 min | Road-trip estimate using average power |
The table is energy ÷ power math, not a promise of real charge time. AC power can be limited by the vehicle or electrical installation. DC fast charging tapers and varies with state of charge, temperature and site conditions.
Monthly ownership question
How much will charging add to my electric bill?
That question is better answered from miles driven × vehicle energy use × your electricity rate than from “how much does a full battery cost?” The calculator estimates monthly wall energy from your own miles and Wh/mi assumption.
Time-of-use plan?
Run the same calculation once with your off-peak rate and once with your peak rate. The difference shows why charging timing can matter before any automation is involved.
Gas comparison
Compare energy cost, not total ownership cost
The gas comparison is deliberately narrow. It answers “what would electricity versus gasoline cost for the same monthly driving?” It does not claim that the vehicle with the lower energy bill has the lower total cost of ownership.
Uses your driving-efficiency and charging-loss assumptions.
Uses the mileage, fuel economy and fuel price you enter.
Shows only energy / fuel spending so the result remains transparent.
FAQ
Tesla charging calculator questions
How much does it cost to charge a Tesla?
Charging cost depends on the energy drawn from the wall and the electricity price you pay. Estimate wall kWh from the state-of-charge change and charging losses, then multiply by the applicable price per kWh.
How long does it take to charge a Tesla at home?
A planning estimate is wall energy in kWh divided by average charging power in kW. Real charging can take longer because available power, temperature and vehicle behavior can vary.
Can this calculator estimate Supercharger charging time?
Yes, but enter a realistic average DC charging power rather than the stall maximum. A Tesla connected to a high-power Supercharger does not hold the site maximum for the entire session.
How much will charging a Tesla add to my electric bill?
Enter your monthly miles, driving efficiency and electricity rate. The calculator estimates monthly wall energy and electricity cost. A time-of-use plan can produce a different result depending on when you charge.
Is a Tesla cheaper to fuel than a gas car?
The calculator can compare electricity cost with gasoline cost using your monthly miles, MPG and gas price. It is an energy-only comparison and does not include purchase price, insurance, depreciation, maintenance or taxes.
Why are Tesla model presets labeled planning assumptions?
Battery capacity and efficiency vary by model year, trim, wheels, weather and driving conditions. Presets make the calculator quicker to use, but the advanced fields remain editable and should not be treated as official specifications for a specific vehicle.

How much does Tesla charging cost? Rates and practical examples
What does a Tesla charge cost at different electricity rates?
The same 60 kWh session changes dramatically with the rate. This is why the answer to “how much does it cost to charge a Tesla?” depends more on where and when you charge than on one national Tesla price.
*U.S. Energy Information Administration: residential average electricity price, January–June 2026. State, utility and time-of-use rates vary widely.
Home charging
Your utility rate, time-of-use window and energy drawn determine the cost. Tesla says home charging is often the cheapest option.
Calculate home charging cost →Supercharging
There is no single nationwide Supercharger price. Use the price shown for the site and the actual session details in Tesla.
Review charging history →Other public charging
Network pricing can include energy, time, session or idle fees. The receipt or network app is the source of truth for that session.
Why “full charge cost” can be misleading
You rarely buy exactly one battery capacity
A charging session normally starts above 0% and ends below or at your daily charge limit. Model and battery configurations also vary. The cleanest calculation uses the kWh actually added, not an assumed “full battery.”
Wall energy and battery energy are not identical
Charging and vehicle systems consume some energy, so energy billed by your utility can exceed the energy retained in the battery. For cost tracking, session or meter energy is more useful than nominal battery capacity.

From cost to action
The cheapest time to charge depends on your utility plan
If your utility offers time-of-use pricing, the same kWh can cost less during off-peak hours. Tesla says owners may increase home-charging savings by switching to a time-of-use EV rate when available.
There is no universal US “cheap hour.” Weekday, weekend, season and utility rules can all change the low-cost window.
Tesla Charge Stats already estimates charging spend. What does DriveQuery add?
Tesla Charge Stats can show charged energy, estimated spend and average cost per kWh by charging location, and it supports custom and time-of-use home rates. DriveQuery is being built around the broader ownership record: charging sessions, trip history, user-defined places, cost context and charging automation together.
Understand
Which charging sessions made the month expensive, and how home, Supercharger and other charging contributed.
Act
Connect the rate window to when the car actually needs energy, instead of only reviewing cost after the fact.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to charge a Tesla at home?
Multiply the kWh added by the electricity price that applies during the charging period. Using the U.S. EIA residential average for January through June 2026, 18.16¢/kWh, a 60 kWh session is about $10.90 for electricity. Your own utility rate can differ substantially.
How do I calculate Tesla charging cost?
Use energy purchased in kWh × price per kWh. For home charging, use the relevant utility rate. For public charging, use the site price and any applicable fees shown for the session.
Is charging at home cheaper than Supercharging?
Tesla says home charging is often the cheapest option. Your actual comparison depends on your utility rate, off-peak periods and current public-charging prices.
What is the cheapest time to charge a Tesla at home?
If you have time-of-use pricing, it is generally the applicable off-peak window. Exact hours vary by utility and rate plan, so there is no single nationwide cheapest time.
Do charging losses affect the cost?
Yes. Energy drawn from the wall can be higher than the energy retained in the battery. For the closest cost estimate, use the energy recorded for the charging session or by your electricity meter.
