Tesla trip history export

Export Tesla trip history to CSV or PDF

Turn reviewed drives into a reusable mileage record with dates, routes, miles, business or personal classification, business purpose, labels and review status kept together.

What an export should look like

Same reviewed trips. Two useful outputs.

CSV gives you rows to calculate with. PDF gives you a period report a person can read without opening a spreadsheet.

What can Tesla export today?

Tesla provides useful vehicle and account data, but it is not the same thing as a recurring, reviewed mileage journal. Tesla's privacy process can provide a copy of certain data associated with your account, which may include vehicle usage information. Tesla also explains that normal driving location and speed are generally not associated with your account by default, and some data may not be stored or may be retained only briefly.

Tesla sourceUseful todayWhere a recurring trip export still helps
Vehicle Trips viewUseful trip meters and energy information for the current driving context. Not a long-running, reviewed business/personal journal of every completed drive.
Tesla Account data requestA broader privacy/data-access workflow that may include vehicle usage information.Availability depends on what Tesla stored and associated with the account; it is not a monthly mileage-report workflow.
DriveQuery captureBuilds a trip-by-trip timeline from vehicle data the user has authorized DriveQuery to receive.Adds the review, labels, business purpose and recurring export layer around those captured trips.
The key difference is continuity.
DriveQuery is being built to maintain a reviewed trip record over time, not to promise that Tesla can retroactively reconstruct every drive you made before connecting the service.

What should a Tesla trip CSV contain?

For analysis, one completed drive per row is the cleanest structure. The export should preserve enough context that a mileage number still means something months later.

1

When

Date plus start and end time for the completed drive.

2

Where

Start and destination, with your own labels such as Office, Client A or Airport.

mi

Mileage

Trip miles and available odometer context for continuity checks.

Purpose

Business, personal or commute classification plus business purpose when you need it.

FieldWhy it belongs in the export
Date + start/end timePlaces the drive in the correct reporting period and gives a useful timeline for review.
Start + destinationKeeps the journey understandable and supports business-destination documentation.
DistanceProvides the mileage basis for totals, reimbursement or tax calculations.
ClassificationSeparates business, personal and commute use without forcing every downstream spreadsheet to recreate the decision.
Business purposePreserves why a business drive happened instead of exporting only the mileage answer.
User labels + review statusKeeps your location context and makes unresolved trips visible before a period is closed.

For US business mileage, export the evidence — not just the total

IRS Publication 463 says transportation records should substantiate the date of car use, business destination, mileage for each business use and business purpose, along with total miles for the year. It also emphasizes timely records; a weekly log that accounts for use during the week can qualify as timely kept.

1Date

When the business use occurred.

2Destination

Where the business drive went.

3Miles

Mileage for that business use.

4Purpose

Why the trip was business-related.

DriveQuery can automate much of the trip evidence, but it should not invent the tax conclusion. The user still reviews whether a trip is business, personal or commute and confirms the business purpose where required.

Not tax certification:
A DriveQuery export is intended to be a structured driving record. Whether a trip is deductible, reimbursable or otherwise reportable depends on the facts and the rules that apply to you.

CSV and PDF solve different jobs

CSV

For analysis and accounting

Filter trips, total business miles, join mileage with expenses or import the record into Excel, Google Sheets or another system.

Best structure: stable columns, one trip per row and classifications kept explicit.

PDF

For review and submission

Show the reporting period, vehicle and mileage totals first, then list the reviewed drives that make up those totals.

Best structure: summary first, evidence underneath.

Business, personal and commute should stay distinguishable

A useful export should not collapse every non-business drive into one unexplained bucket. In the US, ordinary commuting is generally treated differently from business transportation, so the review workflow should let you preserve that distinction where it matters.

BusinessReviewed business use

Retain destination, miles and business purpose.

CommuteHome ↔ regular workplace

Keep it distinguishable instead of silently counting it as business mileage.

PersonalPersonal use

Keep the trip in continuity totals without assigning a business purpose.

Review first, export second

Capture

Build the completed trip from authorized vehicle data.

Label

Apply your own place labels so recurring destinations remain recognizable.

Classify

Confirm business, personal or commute instead of relying on an irreversible guess.

Add purpose

For business drives, keep the reason for the trip with the source record.

Close & export

Generate CSV or PDF from the reviewed period and keep the totals traceable to the trips.

Use odometer context as a quality check

A trip's own measured distance is the primary journey value, but odometer continuity can help expose a missing drive, duplicate segment or implausible reconstruction. It is evidence for review, not a reason to manufacture a route that the service never captured.

Continuous

Trip distance and surrounding odometer context form a plausible sequence.

?

Gap detected

Keep the gap visible and route it for review instead of hiding it inside a total.

Correction

Fix the source trip, then regenerate the period export so every downstream copy stays aligned.

Tesla data request vs. a recurring mileage export

Tesla's account-data request is useful when you want a copy of data Tesla has associated with your account. It is not a guarantee of a complete historical GPS trip journal: Tesla explains that some normal driving data is not account-associated by default and that some data may not be stored or may only be retained briefly.

A recurring DriveQuery export starts from trips the service actually captured after authorization, lets you review the meaning of each drive, then exports the selected period. That is a different workflow from asking Tesla for an account-data archive later.

What DriveQuery is being built to export

  • One completed Tesla drive per CSV row.
  • Date, start/end time, start and destination, miles and available odometer context.
  • User-defined place labels instead of automatic Home/Work assumptions.
  • Business, personal or commute classification plus business purpose where relevant.
  • Review state so unresolved trips stay visible before a report is closed.
  • Period totals that remain traceable to the individual drives underneath.
  • Planned CSV for analysis and PDF for review, submission or archiving.
Early-access note:
The trip export workflow is still being validated. Exact fields, report layouts and file formats may change before general availability.

Frequently asked questions

Can I export Tesla trip history directly from the Tesla app?

Tesla provides trip information in the vehicle and offers an account-data request process for certain data it stores. That is not the same as a recurring CSV/PDF mileage journal of every reviewed completed drive. DriveQuery is being built specifically around ongoing trip capture, review and export.

What should a business mileage CSV contain?

At minimum, keep the date, business destination, mileage for the business use and business purpose, plus enough context to review the journey. IRS Publication 463 also calls for total miles for the year.

Can I export only business trips?

The intended workflow is to let you filter a reviewed period to business trips or include business, personal and commute trips with their classification visible. Exact export controls are still being finalized.

Can a trip export recover drives from before I connected DriveQuery?

Not reliably. Tesla's own data-access documentation says some normal driving data may not be associated with your account, may not be stored or may be retained only briefly. DriveQuery should only claim history from data it actually captured.

Is a DriveQuery export an official IRS document?

No. It is intended to help maintain a structured mileage record. Tax treatment and substantiation depend on your facts and applicable rules, and you remain responsible for reviewing the business purpose and classification.

What happens if I correct a trip after exporting it?

The cleaner workflow is to correct the source trip in DriveQuery and regenerate the report for that period. That keeps the app record, CSV and PDF aligned rather than creating conflicting spreadsheet versions.
